From time to time, Lawyers Club of San Diego recognizes exceptional achievement by individuals furthering the advancement of women in the law and in society. The Lawyers Club Icon Award, established in 2008, is given to an individual who epitomizes success and innovation and whose efforts leave a legacy. The Lawyers Club of San Diego Icon Award honors those who have continued to make meritorious contributions to society throughout their lives, and who share Lawyers Club’s values of justice, inclusion and progress.

  2015 Icon - Senator Olympia Snowe (Ret.)
Senator Snowe is a preeminent example of life-long commitment to advancing society through consensus building and advocacy. The triumphant arc of Senator Snowe’s life and career demonstrate that a persistent commitment to finding common ground and staying true to one’s beliefs can yield substantial success and profound results. Read more...

2014 Icon - Hon. Sandra Day O'Connor 

At a time when opportunities for female lawyers were virtually non-existent, Justice Sandra Day O’Connor graduated Order of the Coif from Stanford University’s law school in 1952 after having served on the Board of Editors of Stanford Law Review. From 1952 to 1953, Justice O’Connor served as the San Mateo County’s Deputy County Attorney. She then served as a Civilian Attorney for Quartermaster Market Center in Frankfurt, Germany from 1954 to 1957, and moved into private practice in Maryvale, Arizona from 1958 to 1960. Read more...

2012 Icon - Justice Judith McConnell

A founding member of Lawyers Club and its first president, Administrative Presiding Justice Judith McConnell obtained both a bachelor’s degree and law degree from University of California, Berkeley. She began her legal career as a trial attorney at the State of California Department of Transportation, entered private practice, and then was appointed to the bench, serving as a judge of both the San Diego Municipal Court and San Diego County Superior Court. Read more...


 2012 Icon - Hon. Lynn Schenk 
A founding member of Lawyers Club and its second President, Schenk’s early career was as in-house staff counsel for San Diego Gas & Electric. In 1976, she received a prestigious position as a White House Fellow and later worked as a special assistant to Vice Presidents Nelson A. Rockefeller and Walter F. Mondale. California Governor Jerry Brown subsequently appointed Schenk as Deputy Secretary for the California Department of Business, Transportation and Housing, and later appointed her as the first woman Secretary of the Department. Read more...

2010 Icon - Betty Evans Boone
Boone, a charter member of Lawyers Club since 1972, was the second female graduate of the University of San Diego School of Law. In 1981 Boone retired for the first time from the Office of County Counsel, where she was Chief Deputy County Counsel. Thereafter, she was an independent administrative hearing officer until her second retirement in the early 1990's. 

2008 Icon - Helen Thomas
Often called "The First Lady of the Press,” Helen Thomas (1920-2013) was a trailblazer, breaking barriers for women reporters while covering every President of the United States from John F. Kennedy to Barack Obama. For 57 years, Thomas served as White House correspondent for United Press International. It was during her years covering Kennedy that Thomas began closing presidential press conferences with the tagline "Thank you, Mr. President,” the first woman to do so.  Read more...
